Unit Id Help - 5/J.R. 17. 95.

A friend of mine gave me a nice 1906 Gewehr 98 (Danzig) this past weekend. One that I intend to keep. The right side of the bolt disassembly disc has the markings: 5/J.R. 17. 95.

The top of the "17" thins out a bit, but these look like the numbers. Is "95" a unit serial number?

Does anyone have information about the unit and locations of service?

Rich, the marking is Reichswehr from the Weimar period. It indicates Infantry regiment 17, company 5, weapon number 95.

Is the rear sight modified?

Thanks for the unit information. This site didn't have too much in the way of history.

I'm not sure if the rear sight is modified. What should I look for? The bluing on the base looks brighter that the rest of the gun. The numbers on the sight range from 1-20. The sight and the base serial numbers match (8911)
