A gent at work gave me these photos of his father-in-law. All he knows is he was from Stuttgart and served in Macedonia. Born in the 1880s. See anything else?

    Wuttemberg

Both Bavaria and Wuttemberg have lion supporters on their coats of arms; however, the Wuttemberg arms are broader at the base and the lion's legs are less "hairy". I think the second image shows a Wuttemberg picklehaube with perhaps (?) Landwehr/Reservist cross mounted atop the helmet plate.

    Wuttemberg:

    Bayern:

A better image of the two may be found here: http://www.kaisersbunker.com/hp/hw2.jpg

Garde Litzen, with a star on the Wurt wappen, from Stuttgart, looks to be Dragoner-Regt. K******246;nig (2. W******252;rttembergisches) Nr.26 (Stuttgart-Cannstatt) XIII Armee Korps.

      Unit List >> http://www.kaisersbunker.com/gtp/New/dragon0.htm

A plate which unfortunately only shows the Mannschaften Wappen, but the officer's was enamel>> http://www.kaisersbunker.com/gtp/dragon2.htm

A close-up of the stap cypher would say for sure. He is wearing the M15 Bluse and appears (?) to be a Lt.

Wow .... that's a Garde star? I'd like to someday see a clearer image of the Wappen.

What ribbon might he be wearing? The light stripes are too broad and the dark area too narrow for the EKII, right?

Thanks for the lesson Tony (& Kaiser).

His name was Walter Strauss, born 1889. He was in some sort of motorized unit and was in Macedonia for a time. His family oral history says he was turning the crank on a vehicle and it swung backwards, breaking his arm. He was from Stuttgart.

                  Leutnant der Reserve Walter Strauß

                  Hi Marc,

Vizefeldwebel der Reserve Walter Strauß (II Stuttgart) was commissioned into the Württemberg Detachment of the Royal Prussian Motor Battalion (Kraftfahr-Bataillon) as a Leutnant der Reserve on the 23rd of November 1917.

Thus he wears the uniform of the Prussian Garde-Pionier with the Württemberg helmet embellished with the Order of the Crown of Württemberg.

Interestingly at this rather late stage in the war he equipped himself with the very nice helmet!

                  Regards
                  Glenn

                    Glenn,

That is amazing! Thanks so much for the info. He left Germany in the interwar period as he was jewish, though he had a very respectable career in Germany up to then. His son-in-law works with me and is a concentration-camp survivor. His father also served in WW1. Amazing stuff...

                    Thanks,
                    Marc

                      From his son-in-law:

Thank You very much. This tallies with what I know. Walter came from a very rich family and I doubt that it was a hardship for him to get the pretty helmet...<O></O>
