    M18 Cut Out

    Hello,
Had this helmet some time now, no decal I can see, m31 liner, battle damaged, correct ET 64 stamp. My question is what is the fair market value?
Seen some in the past ranging up to $2000, even more. I know they are rare, but prices? Thank you in advance.
    Regards,
    Gary

            "cut-out" construction

Greetings Gary: In regards to the construction of your helmet,IMO the ear "cut-out "part on the apron does not have the correct "flare" resulting from added metal being used when factory manufactured. In the absence of a flared out apron ...to me,this indicates material was removed to procuce the "cut- out".The side profile of your hemet apron is straight(no flare out at the ear) indicating that a standard M18 was altered to produce a "cut-out " helmet. This is MY opinion and I look forward to the comments of others regarding the shape.
            Regards
            Zeke

It looks to me to have the flare you want to see but they are not very clear photos.
Can you post clear photos, side and top views?

I agree the liner looks stuffed in, the band looks like its been there awhile, rivets bent tightly. Pics are bad I agree, try these. Thank you all for your help.
                  Regards,
                  Gary

The new photos just don't help much. It's the lighting. I cannot say, it looks ok so far as the shell goes. Assuming it's a real cut out the crack is going to effect the value.
I'd say no more then 425.00 for it and add whatever the liner is worth to someone.

                          "cut-out" construction

Greetings: Since becoming a member of WAF,I've realized it's main purpose is to help inform collectors how to recognize, unaltered original historical items and avoid fakes.Being truthful is not easy sometimes when it is given constructively and should not be taken out of context. The "flare out" I am describing on original M18 "cut-out" helmets is quite noticeable. The configuration of this type of helmet can only be achieved through factory production by the use of extra metal on the apron around the ear. Hopefully the photo enclosed will establish better what I have been trying to describe. IMO the M18 helmet posted in this thread has been altered to produce a "cut-out" that has basically little value as it is not an original "cut -out" and the alterations have reduced the value it had as an M18 drastically .As M18 ear cut-out helmets are rare and very expensive ,please take this as information that can be applied for future acquistions. I believe further research of other documented and published M18 ear cut-out helmets will reinforce my statements.Thank you.
                          Best regards
                          Zeke

I agree with Zeke. Some time ago, I posted pictures to compare an ear cut out shell, with a standard M18.

You can find the pictures here :
                            http://daggers.infopop.cc/eve/forums...614#8340032614

(you need to register first in order to see them).

I would have posted them here again, but its difficult for me to post photographs on WA directly.

                              Hallo!!
Yes Zeke say a right thing!!!
An original WW1 era m.18 cut on is it very rare, lot of the few made during the last weeks of war was reused in the 20 years, (m.31 liners and chinstraps).
I don't like the helmet in the post, the bad pics too don't help to do more discussions about the color too!
