Can someone help me read some writing on a M1916 ? I have a M1916 helmet that has a very faint name or something on the back inside skirt. I have a hard time reading German when the names are common and the print is clear because of the script handwriting. I don't know if this is a name or some type of unit marking . I have enclosed pics of the helmet and three of the writing and also my interpretation of the writing . I may not be seeing the lines correctly but maybe someone can connect the lines to make sense. W66 Left skirt and R556 in Dome Thanks

The photo manipulation made the writing stand out better and it looks like my interpretation of it is real close but it still doesn't spell anything . This could be initials and then the II but it would be unusual in the US at present time to do that . You would give your full name and then the II . Maybe in 1916 Germany it would be appropriate. Someone told me that back then in Europe only the elite or titled persons used II after their names but I don't know if that is true.Last edited by Bruce Jarrett; 09-13-2006, 08:34 PM.
