    German Militaria 1870-71

    Hello All,

One of my frends who collects German militaria of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 is searching for uniforms, equipement and accessories relating to this subject. He would particularly like to complete a prussian line infantry dress. Missing is the haversack and a tunic with the issuing stamps inside.

Could someone tell me where he can find such items?

    Thanks,

    Richard

About the only thing that I can tell you is to try German ebay. That is the only place I know of where it might show up one day. Some of the upper level german dealers may run across it from time to time. Try Andre Huesken, Helmut Weitze, etc. I just saw a Napoleonic period Hussar pelz show up on a site recently but it was $12,000. Just to show the old stuff is around. Most of it is in museums and collections and they are not selling. Something like that is going to be a "right place at the right time" sort of find.

      Hi Richard,

Your friend may be looking for the impossible. I have always been interested with the Franco-Preu******223;en war. Since the mid 1980s I have received most of the German auction catalogues, and never have I seen an Line Infantry Waffenrock with issue date prior to 1872. I have been searching that long. One has never appeared on de-bay to my knowledge, and I keep a close eye on that since I joined in 1998. Wish I'd bought stocks.....

I knew the retired Museumsleter Herrn Colonel Schmidt of Das Wehrgeschichtliche Museum Schloss Rastatt and had the pleasure of a visit from him in Calgary in 1993. On my last visit to Schloss Rastatt in 2004, I was joined for my visit by Herrn B******246;hm, the current Museumsleter. I was interested in seeing an issued Waffenrock from the Franco-Preu******223;en war, but sadly, of the 2000+ Waffenrock in Rastatt, none to show.

I now have 10 helmets worn during the Franco-Preu******223;en war :

      Model 1867 Garde Grenadier Pickelhaube
Model 1860 Preu******223;en (Hannover) Infantry Regt 79 Pickelhaube
      Model 1867 Baden Infantry Pickelhaube
      Model 1867 Hessen Pickelhaube Leib-Dragoner-Regt.
Model 1867 Oldenberg Infantry Regt 91 Pickelhaube
      Model 1860 Preu******223;en Line J******228;ger Tschako
      Model 1862 Preu******223;en Line K******252;rassier Metalhelme
Model 1867 Preu******223;en Ulanen Regt Nr. 16 Tschapka
Model 1867 Preu******223;en Ulanen Regt Nr. 1 Tschapka
Model 1867 Sachsen (Saxon) Reiter Regiment Reiterhelm

Sadly, no issued infantry Waffenrock yet though I will never stop looking. Although, I do not expect to ever find one.

Your friend could get around the "impossible" by finding a Eigetumsst******252;ck (privately purchased) M67 Waffenrock, with the key features of no rear slit up the back skirt, and 25 mm buttons.

He would also have to find a Regt that carried the same shoulder strap colors in 1870 and in 1895 after the reorg. I have a list of the Franco-Preu******223;en war colors, and he can compare from my Waffenrock charts here> http://www.kaisersbunker.com/gtp/

Get your friend to contact me if he wants, always nice to hear from someone else who is interested in what I believe, was the most significant war in the last 200 years as it set the course of European history from then, to now.

You're absolutely right Tony, the most significant war the Prussians were involved in. They should have quit after that one!

I wish I would have known, you were looking for Franco- Prussian War Items. I did have a Prussian General's collar tab from the war.
