    15th Ulan Strap

Well, Ithink I finally figgured out how to use my new scanner . I thought I 'd share what I think is my rarest strap. I picked this up with a bag of straps and belts from a dealer at a Calgary gunshow almost 20 years ago (man time flies) .

I've always believed this strap to be a good one and it came from a good source. I find it not surprising that every fake strap I've bought has come from ebay in the last 5 years.

I've learned some important lessons - 1. don't buy on ebay, 2. don't buy unless you can hold the item in your hand and examine it, and 3. find a mentor and ask questions from a trusted collector.

    Enjoy,

    Greg

You made a type error Greg, that was 10 years ago. But yes, time flys! I left Calgary in 1996 and there is a pretty good chance that this strap would have been mine if I had stayed and beat you to it. But I am glad you still have it,

A superb example and would you believe that it ten years I have still not able to find an example? T

There is no doubt that this one is real. To an experienced eye, it just jumps up and shouts "Real!". Great find.

Thanks Dan. It has a special place in my meager collection of straps.

Great to hear from you Tony, 96 would be about right. I was pretty happy when Wayne dropped the bag in my lap. I find it odd that there were such high quality collections located in one city. Since moving to BC I've seen some amazing collections but sadly the camaraderie is lost.

I didn't want to make you blush Tony but between you and RoyA, you were/are my inspiration to continue to collect. I still remember visiting your house and being speachless as to the quality or your collection. It was an honour to see your museum and expeience it first hand.

        Cheers,

        Greg

Greg, my fondest memories were when all of us were together in Calgary, meeting regularly at the Rider's Roost. Perhaps we will see you at the Easter show some day? The MCCC convention is also in Calgary this year.
Everyone would love to see you again.

            Greg,

It's nice to see something from your collection, especially something so nice. I have been trying to find out what you have for quite a number of years. At this rate, I will never live long enough to see them all! Thanks for showing it.

Regarding M08 Ulan straps, I have seen only a handful in over 40 years of collecting. Of those, I have only managed to get two, a yellow piped example from the 11th regiment and a yellow piped 21st Saxon Ulan example. The Saxon Ulan regiments wore a different pattern, in that they wore standard cut shoulder boards and not the "pear shaped" style.

The most common, if you can call it that, are examples from the 6th regiment. I'm not sure of the reason for this, but it seems, in general terms, that items from this regiment are relatively more plentiful. Nothing scientific, just an impression.
