Can anyone help identify the badge on this officers field artillery picklehaulbe. I was told it was an earlier pattern of standard Prussian badge. Does this affect the value of the helmet, as it is about the best officers picklehaulbe I have seen in a long time.

Merry Christmas. Is it cold this time of year in Ireland? That is a nice looking helmet. With those curved chinscales, it is Field Artillery. With that old-pattern Grandier chicken, it was worn by three Regiments:

(Gumbinnen/Insterburg) I Armee Korps

I'm definitely not one of the experts here, but pickelhauben seem, at least to me, to be pretty much a seller's market. Some of the prices paid on sites such as eBay are outrageous!
I looked at one German dealer for you, the site's at http://www.militaria-online.de/eng.html, and his helmets seem to run about 1,000 to 1,400 Euros and up. There are others here who may be able to give you a much better idea of price than me.

It might be the photo's, but it looks like this helmet has been "cleaned up". Parts of it looked polished and the body appears to have been repainted. It is also missing the stars that would hold on the artillery ball. I would say this is about a $650.00 ish helmet.Comment

Actually, the dome stud screws combinded with the officer pattern Kokarde as Joe mentioned on 24 Dec, indicates the helmet is not an officer, but for a Fähnrich. It is correct. Tony, Ken is not correct. Although his heart is in the right place, he, like many dealers, misidentify all Eigentums-helm, (also known as Extra-helm or Eigetumsstück) Pickelhauben as being Einjährig-Freiwilliger (One year volunteer).Originally posted by TonyM
The difference is that Einjährig-Freiwilliger (One year volunteer) were absolutely not authorized to wear officer Kokarden. They wore Mannschaften Kokarden. Only Fähnrich, officers, and Unteroffizier mit Portepee (NCOs with the Officer's sword knot) with authorized to wear the officer Kokarden.Comment
