Tornister Items.

Greetings All,

I was reading through "DIE FELDGRAUE UNIFORMIERUNG DES DEUTSCHEN HEERES 1907-1918" and some items were mentioned that I am not familiar with. I would like to see an example of the following:

Fleischbuechse
zweibacksaeckchen
Kaffeebuechsen
Salzbeutel
Gemuesekonserve

If any body has images that they can share or information on a reference that will give me more information on these items I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Is there any reference that anybody could direct me to that might have pictures, descriptions, or measurements?

There is nothing that I know of. I know many serious collectors and have never seen any of these items in a collection. They were considered so inconsequential that they are not described in detail nor pictured anywhere. Even the German museums do not have Probe pieces to examine. One would think that at least some of these items would be B.A. marked and therefore recognizable as German gear, but nothing has surfaced. If you find some information, I would love to know about it.

I was just about to give up hope that anybody would respond. Now I will give up hope!! Ha! Ha!
I am a reenactor and I make alot of my kit. I was looking for pictures and/or dimensions to make some of the stuff. I will keep on looking. Maybe some items made it to early WWII formations.Thanks again.

Hey Craigob,

Thanks for the imput. These rations look just like the repro WWII stuff at http://www.wiking.org/ . Most of these places don't show their research on the rations ,if there was any done at all! I believe that they make a label for a can size that they use. There was an excellent article on WWII German rations in the WWII German Equipment forum.
I would like to see some WWI period photos of the "Iron " ration or pre-packaged meals. I am really looking for the containers!

I have handled an issue salt bag marked to a Saxon unit in the past and one recently sold on German eBay for about EUR 100.

The Zwiebacksäckchen may have been an issue item, but the other pieces were almost certainly commercially produced tinned food items that were marked accordingly for military purchase orders, much like items found in German ration packs ever since.

The auction (#6226256062) was a lot more recent than I remembered.

The only reference I can find in period literature to the items you mention above is the diagram below taken from a 1915 issue training manual. It shows how the Zwiebacksäckchen, Gemüsekonserven and Salzbeutel were to be placed in the Tornister.

I am sure I have posted this before, but I cannot remember where.
