84/98 alter Art, marked O.36. with leather scabbard

    Hi all,

i dont know if this is the correct forum. I wouldnt post it in the daggers section since there are mostly ww2 items.

I have found a salty and worn 84/98 Bajonett and would like to know the value ??

The Bajo is marked with "O.36." on the bajo and the scabbard. I think it means "Ostsee". Am I right ??

Iam mainly interested in the value of this item since iam planing to sell it.

    Thanks Jens

                        Jens,

You bayonet is an old style (aA) S84/98 made from the reworked S71/84. I do not think this marking is naval as the Ostsee designation was not used during Imperial times. Imperial naval bayonets were generally marked to the Werft- or Matrosen- unit. The marking appears to be an army marking for stored small arms assigned to various Oberkommando. The cancelled marking appears to be to an army reserve-regiment, but it is hard to read. Anyway, I would suggest that it is an Oberkommando marking for old pattern (alte Art) bayonets, such as yours, that were kept in storage.

                        I hope this helps.

                          Hi SCHUPO,

many many thanks for your explanation. Never heared anything about that Oberkommando marking. Its always nice to learn new things here.

I wonder what would be a good asking price for this bayonet ? I will try to sell it somewere since iam more a ww2 collector, but i have no real idea about the value. Can you help me out there ?

Many thanks for your time, Bests Jens

                            Jens,

You are welcome. Price is very subjective on this particular bayonet. It is in poor condition with pitting overall and sharpening which drives the "value" down substantially. It has interesting (but not very sexy) matching unit markings that compensate somewhat for condition. My thoughts would be in the range of $50- $100 but only because the markings offset the condition. Without the markings the bayonet would barely be collectable as a type piece. I think the unit markings are the only reason someone would buy this bayonet in this condition so the buyer will have to overlook the sharpening and pitting. Is that more than you wanted to know?

                              Hi Schupo,

thanks for your reply. All is fine with your price judgment. I think i can get around 100 € here on my site. Here in the former DDR are a lot of old Bayonett collectors around and i think one of them will pick it for 100 bucks.

Many thanks for taking your time with me, Jens
