Photos are not the best but isn't too hard to see. Anyone else get a look at it?

now that's funny. Seriously, are their any navy visor experts here? Was curious if this could have been real. In my limited experience of pre ww2 naval caps I don't like it. The cockade looks good but looks added. IMHO

Hello Humble, I took a look at this cap in trying to decide if I should shoot a bid myself. I went over about 100 photos of Imperial German naval officers wearing their schirmmutze. None of the pics had the abzeichen going all the way up to the crown of the cap. In fact, this cap's abzeichen actually appears to exceed the cap crown! Perhaps other members have photos showing the overly large abzeichen but absent such, I passed. I agree, it just didn't look right. IMO the abzeichen (which looks ok from the pic) is not original to the cap.

            Thanks Honest Bobby

At least I'm not the only one. He was selling another navy type that bear was interested in. This guy has just too many odd pieces for me to feel safe.

I did however jump on that other one last week that sold for 500 Euro's. I just hope I don't get caught with my pants down when it arrives. It looked pretty good and hope I did enough homework because it would hurt pretty bad if it turns out to be a crap cap.

I nearly bid on this one from the same seller but I don't know enough about Navy caps yet to be sure of what I'm doing.

Hey Mike, Not sure which cap you refer to (one that you picked up). Post some photos when you can. There have been some mighty efforts in Europe of late to take non-military caps and put cockades on them, selling them as Imperial caps. Several have been posted at this site. Hope you got a good hit

                Best of luck

                  Hi Bobby

Well, I must confess the leather binding on the visor threw me and perhaps the chinstrap, but the rest of it including the blue satin lining was enough for me to take a chance. If it turns out to be a remake I will chalk it up to experience.

You guys probably already saw this but I'll post it again.

I'm not qualified to really speak on this at all, but it sure looks real, and much better than the other cap you posted. I recall visiting the Kaiser Wilhelm I memorial in West Berlin back in 1965 with my brother and there was an old bearded gentleman that was there, I believe he was a caretaker, and he was wearing a cap like the one you purchased. I remember telling my brother, "Hey, that old man's wearing an Imperial navy cap."

Well, apart from seeing it up close (smell, feel, look) I can only hope my intuition was correct. With more replies like yours I may be able to sleep well until arrival. I will be sure to post clear and exact images upon arrival.

Well the pics aren't the best ( I had seen it on ebay) but I agree with Mike, it looks better than the most recent one: At least the abzeichen looks in proportion to the cap. When it arrives the old hands-on inspection should do the trick. Good luck and let us know the results.

                          Hey Mike,

I am no where near an expert on these... and have only handled a few and seen various period photos ... The only thing to me that stands out in your cap as a 'red flag' is the visor trim. In the ones that I have seen/handled, the visor trim was wider and not narrow like this one..... Could just be a variation but that was my thought.

                          Cheers
                          Mark

                            Hi Mark
I too thought the same thing. But after viewing some old pics of Imperial men wearing the classic cap I was able to see that there are exceptions to that rule.

Should have the cap early next week and will be sure to post many clear and concise pics.
