          Also not an expert but I think it was around early 1917 the change occured but someone here will probably give you an exact date! I know that the metal helmets were gradually fazed in so you did have both types in use at the same time for a period of time.

            Hello,

            From 1916 on steel helmets were introduced, in the beginning often only for attack or frontline troops on the Western Front, later for all frontline troops. Troops on quiet fronts or in rear areas wore pickelhauben a lot longer than other units, often probably till the end of the war.
