    Help on this visor

When I saw this I was pretty sure it was WWI, but this is completely out of my wheelhouse. So I took a chance for $20. What do I have ? Unit, regiment, ??? And what do they sell for now a days ? Any help appreciated.

    Hi

It is a visor cap for a NCO or unteroffizier of the German infantry, WW1 period, perhaps a bit before. Hard to say which state it is from since the state cockade is missing and the present cockade is at the wrong place (should be on the blue crown).

It would probably go for around $80 to $100 on a dealer website so you have done pretty well.

I agree with the earlier comments, although I think "retail"on this cap is likely a bit higher, but that's just my opinion.
Nevertheless, this was an absolute steal; you just need to add a state or kingdom cockade & mount the Reichskokarde on top.

And you have the size penciled on the underside of the visor.

How does one go about moving the cockade to the top ? Is that safe to so with harming the visor ?

If you look inside the hat behind where the cockade is located you should see a split pin with the two wires folded out from a single hole. Carefully bring the two pins together and pull the cockade away from the hat removing the pins with it. Then you should be able to find another hole directly above that one centered on the front of the crown. Insert the pins into the hole, push the cockade all the way in and fold the pins back out and you're done. The less bending of the pins the better. The replacement state cockade you need will also have the split pin for attaching and is not a rare/costly item.

Generally it is very tough to remove these cockades, or add them. On untouched originals the 2 pins do not penetrate the lining. Perhaps this example is different because the national cockade should not have been where it now is. If the pins protrude through the lining then it is easy to remove.

I'll check the lining and see if the cockade protudes thru lining and post some picks.

This cap was officially replaced by a feldgrau visored cap via the regulations of September 21, 1915, though in practice, their use continued thoughout the war.

Confirmed.National cockade was moved. And there is a second hole above. Where can I find a replacement for the second cockade ?
