Stahlhelm with unit mark??

Pretty dirty when I got it and I wiped it with a light oil and revealed
AL 514
Nearly painted on the front.
Any clue of the significance of the marking?

The marking is not of German origin. The pound sign (hash mark) and "1" without up-stroke was not used in German.
