    Fake 1870/1871 Campaign Bars

    These came on 2 medal bars from a collection I bought a few years ago. They were IDed here as fake, so I removed them. Just found them in a box so I thought I would post them as a reference.

        Gary, it is the details of the lettering and the background. And based on originals I have with exposed pins, the angle of the ends.

        Discussed here;
        http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=709950

        At this point I have more than 25 medal bars with Franco-Prussian campaign bars and none are like these two fakes.

              The way they were made - especially have a look at the letters.

              They are faked.

                Here are some removed originals. These came with an 1870 EKII from what appears to have been a disasembled medal bar. Have no idea why someone would take apart a nice medal bar, but they did. Also have the 25th Jubilee clasp.

                  Comparison of the original and fake Paris bar. While obviously there are variants of each original bar with subtle differences, the fakes are unmistakable. Something I knew nothing about several years ago.

                      I heard or read somewhere that people used to disassemble medals bars because they could get more for the medals individually rather than selling the whole bar. Not sure if this is true but it sure is a shame to think that someone would commit such an act of collecting treason!

                      Great information Willi, thank you!

                        Hello Kirby,

                        Sadly, medal bars are still disassembled and the orders/medals sold individually. There are usually items like this listed on Ebay form time to time. Most auction houses now also split up groups (orders/medals, documents, uniforms, etc.) to get the most money for each item. This has become standard!

                        Best regards,
