    G e r m a n not brit 'lusitania' medfal

I've been studying up on these medallions and it seems I have a rare original german one: part of goetz name (barely) legible on rim, unmauts where they should be, and thin cross section. also, lots better detail and definition than the cast british ones. I also have a couple of those and did a comparo

anyhow, what do you wonks say, please? much appreciated!

note the skeleton's lattice background, on the brit examples it's really indistinct

I think there are no comments because no ones sure ! I did a research on these a few years back and it seems that there are lots of copies even from Japan !
All I could filter out from it was the true German ones are always bronze not iron and a lot thinner than the usual seen , and of course the spelling of may as ‘mai’ .
I believe there are fake bronze ones too. Like all things desirable the waters are well and truly muddied ( no pun intended ) so tracking down a ligit one is tricky.

cheers, fern! points - including pun - well taken. bit of a minefield for sure. but I've three others, all 'fat" brit ones, and they're pretty crude by comparison.

all these from the same estate of a WWII us naval reserve officer who also was with the us maritime service / us merchant marines, and later cdr. of a us naval intel unit and after that
              defense attache (read DIA).

maybe the smithsonian coins and medals div. has the answer

Looks not bad. Original by Karl Goetz in bronze should have 58 mm diameter (in silver 56,4 mm)
