When did all these 1870 fakes appear on the market?
It seems once you focus on a few features, it is rather easy to authenticate them. I say this as an "ameteur in training".....
Do the Oakleaves have some simple indicators as well?
The "9th bead fakes" have been around sense the early 2000s . I think
maybe 2003 or 2004. The "Latvian" fakes showed up a couple years after that
and then came the "bad crown fakes" The "muffin crown" fake and the
"Deschler or Pot hole" fakes were around before I ever joined the forum.
Fake oaks have been around for almost as long as the fake crosses. Some
are easy to spot because they are cast instead of stamped. Some are very
convincing .
