I don ´t think that this is a contemporary badge - you find this style a lot on ebay.
Very similar to these:

The lack of design, detail and craftmanship is „unimperial“ , if not plainly „ungerman“

Fake badge , two a penny on eBay and the like .

I'm not debating, just curious...but what are some telltale signs that this is fake?

Well the first thing to be wary of is the quantity of these types on the market now and for the past few years. I first came across one about 7 or 8 years ago in silver and plated over reverse. It’s trying to be a meybauer of sorts but with a Godet style aircraft. They appear in various guises silver ,base metal ,plated over reverse and this hollow type. Trust me, they are wrong . Ferg
