Roy, I have seen regimental stiens before and really like them. I have always hesitated buying one as I don't know how to tell a real one from a fake. Can you give some pointers?

MP44...nice steins

Your first stein is to the 2nd Hannoverian Ulan Regiment Nr. 14. It was raised in 1803 and had Garrisons at St. Avoid & Mörchingen.Your Reservist was at St. Avoid.
Your second stein is from the 5 Grand ducal Hessian Infantry Regiment Nr. 168.
It was raised in 1897 and had Garrisons at Butzbach, Offenbach & Friedberg. Your Reservist was at Butzbach.

Like anything else I suppose, it's fairly easy to distinguish between original and repro if you've personally seen both hands-on.
The most significant features to look for are as follows:

Transfers
The transfers should have hand-painted details such as buttons, buckles, epaulettes and even helmet plates. You will be able to feel the hand-painting (bumps) with your finger tips. Some repro's have been touched up by hand to deceive, but no hand-painting at all, or very little hand-painting can be considered a warning sign.

Lids
Originals were cast in 3 or 4 piece molds, and the mold lines will be very obvious. Repro's are cast from a single mold. Original lids can be very bright and new looking...it just depended on the amount of lead in the pewter.

Thumblifts
Should be high quality with good detail. Many fake Bavarian steins have an uncrowned rampant lion.

Lithopanes
Any Lithopanes with nudity or sexuality are repro. There are repro's out there with Lithopanes identical to originals, but they tend to have a dark background.

Sides
The side of the stein body should be straight except where the stein flares out at the bottom. Many repros (not all) have obvious tapered sides.

State Colors
An original stein will typically (not always) feature the state colors in a banner or shield, as well as along the upper and lower decorative bands.

Authentication is really a sum of all of the above, as well as certain other elements that may distinguish a particular regiment...many fakes are historically inaccurate.
