    1813 iron core

I saw this 1813 iron core with the eyelet included in the casting, is this normal casting of the 1800s ?

        I've seen them before.

I believe they were made as souvenir pieces from ironworks. Iron was imbued with a somewhat mystical quality in Prussian national mythology, the Iron Cross more than anything else.

I would consider it a patriotic souvenir, probably something you could buy in the giftshop or perhaps something on display in the factory visitors' center.

        Best regards,
        Streptile

The piece is for sale in the web-shop of Andreas Thies and it's clearly described as made of bronze:

"Eisenkern zum Eisernen Kreuz 2. Klasse, 1813.
Bronze geschwärzt, mit abgestuftem Rand und angegossener Öse.
            "

Souvenir pieces of an Iron works made of bronze - that sounds odd.

And IMO they are very good copies, remove the eyelet and you have a good 1813 core, notice the slanting 8 very similar to early stepped cores of the 1813.
