I´d say related to the Franco-German war 1870/71- but not the official Commemoration medal, rather a regional one from the state of Baden

Yes. Founded on August 2, 1895 by Grand-Duke Friedrich I of Baden to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Franco-Prussian War. It was made by B.H. Mayer of Pforzheim, who delivered 923 medals in silver. There was also a gold medal with crown.

I have seen these before. If it is 3.5inches in length , it is a commemorative piece for the Franco Prussian War, but would have been on elaborate ribbon and bow almost as wide as a sash and then tied onto the groups' standards. It's a flag medal.

This is obviously the version that was a medal to be suspended from the veteran standard. But, a smaller version was also given to members of the veteran's association who fought in 1870, which explains why there were more than 900 minted.

There was also one of a similar design for Württemberg.

Very interesting, and would be great
to see as used on an actual flag.

If you check out 19th century prints of European uniforms, or patriotic prints, and sometimes battle scenes, you will see streamers coming off the top of the unit's standard with medals dangling off the ends. Some will have bravery medals or orders attached and it's like a unit citation . You have a similar thing with U.S. regimental standards with campaign ribbons. I've never really looked closely at them so you may have valour awards in amongst the other ribbons. In Austria these oversized medals were also on standards and could be for unit anniversaries , emperors' anniversaries, bravery. There were special ones from emperors from other countries which were given to these foreign regiments who were named after the emperor. The emperor would be the honourary colonel to that regiment. The imperial Russian standards would make me weep decorated with Russian orders and decorations worth many thousands of dollars and being knocked about.
