I respectfully disagree, to my eyes it looks like the yellow is in the Austrian orientation with the yellow on the left. It has just been reversed on the opposite side to give a more pleasing aesthetic effect in the mounting.

Actually the ribbon is wrapped in a standard way.

Since most ribbons are bilaterally symmetrical you never notice that one edge naturally ends up on the left side of the underwrap, and the other edge on the same side of the overwrap.

So you can look at the ribbon as "Austrian mount" or "Prussian mount" depending on where you look at the bar.

Thanks for the insight Streptile Very interesting though the fact that we have an Austrian version of the medal amidst all the other Prussian awards.

Incidentally, does anyone know of any good source for which units were eligible for which of the 1870-1871 clasps? I had a source back in the day but has since been lost.

This is still the best source:

An entire magazine devoted to the subject (in German). Over 50 pages; really like a small book. I found one on eBay without too much trouble a few years ago. I struggle with the German but if you read it well you can get up to speed in no time.
