WW1 Observer Badge

Hello,

I was wondering what everyone thought about this observer badge? I was basically wondering about the gap between the wreath and the base. Why is there a gap if its a solid badge? This answer might be obvious but I am rather new to imperial awards...

Why do you think it is a solid badge ? The write up says hollow construction so the gap is where the two parts come together , or not .... common to see these gaps in the joining faces of the two parts . Meybauer are known for it around the edges . Badge is good to my eye. Ferg

These were soldered from 2 pieces of stamped sheet metal, thus making a hollow badge. The back has the rayed pattern that shows on both sides, and the front consists of the wreath and crown. You can see the seam on the outside edge, requiring a loupe on the really high quality ones. And as in this example, a gap is sometimes seen. The hole drilled in the back allows expanding gasses to escape during soldering. I have seen hollow observer badges that didn't have a hole, probably just venting around the gap as shown here.
