    Prussian 1866 medal - fake?

The ribbon is certainly fake. But the medal seems odd to me. The ring is oddly attached and doesn't appear to be just a repair. Thoughts?

      Hi Willi,

      That's a good medal.

The ridged small ring is normal and is in fact unique to award-types. It was coined with the medal as a single stem with three ridges, then bent into shape and soldered on one side back to the medal.

Zweitstücke or medalbar duplicates had standard "EK type" loops soldered on:

Same refers to many other decorations of this period, like Alsen Kreuz, Düpperler Sturmkreuz, Erinnerungskreuz Königgrätz, Erinnerungskreuz Main-Armee, Erinnerungs-Kriegsdenkmünze 1863 für Kämpfer von 1813-1815, Kriegs-Denkmünze für Kämpfer 1864 or Hohenzollern Denkmünze für Kämpfer 1848-1849.

At the medal for Franco-Prussian War 1870-71 the loop is not ridged, but soldered, too.

Both medals 1864 & 1870-71 in combatant version of bronze have also edge inscription AUS EROBERTEM GESCHÜTZ (From Conquered Cannons), but many period Zweitstücke (replacements) without inscription also exist.

          regards
          Tomasz
