U-Boot postcard

Hello All:

Here is a nice card I just got. It has a dial on the side which allows a U-Boot to pop up in the waves at the top and then at the bottom.

What is the mechanism that when the lower right pinwheel is moved it drives the other pinwheel, centered in the upper left?

Claudius - I'm not really sure how it works. There seem to be 2 wheels within the card which are sort of sandwiched in between 2 cards. Here is a view of the back and you may be able to see the impressions. To be sure how it works I would have to take it apart and that would not be a good idea.

you're right....absolutely do NOT take it apart. I don't want you to think I was suggesting it.

I was just curious how they did accomplished it. If they are paper gears, then I bet they are two non-circular gears to get u-boots to rise and fall.

This is just my advice; be sure to store it in a cool dry place and only turn it slowly. The paper gears will be susceptible to wear if they get too damp and under too much stress. Then you will have to take it apart to repair it
