    Prussian "quad" pilot badge

A friend has queried the lack of air holes on this badge, which appears to be a hollow production. It appears similar to a silver example in Pandis's reference that likewise does not have holes.

    I'd greatly appreciate any comments.

    Thanks, Mike

I don't like the looks of this one. A little too coarse, and with a pewter-like patina.

Excellent original badge with fine detail. Text book piece from this maker. I have several of these and this compares perfectly, detail ,hardware ,mm, etc.....

              Hi!
Is this your badge or do you have only the pictures? On the pictures no holes are visible - that doesn´t mean there aren´t any!
Quadrat badges sometimes do have very tiny vent-holes, hidden close to the hinge (upper and lower side possible) or the catch. (see pictures of my silvered tombac example - the details of the badges match perfectly)
As far as I know these holes are essential during the soldering process to let the hot gases escape. Otherwise the backplate (and the badge) will suffer deformation. If there are hollow examples without holes this information has escaped me up to now.

So if you can check the badge for holes - do it.

              Regards
              Hagrid

Many thanks for all the information.

After close examination with a magnifier, I still can't see any holes. I suspect they've been covered by the hinge and/or catch.

Yes its possible that re holes under c catch and mechanism. But I think that I see the hole under the mechanism, take a look on that area.
