I know this is a long shot, but I have a medalbar identified to a Major Fredrick Sauter of the Bayern Armee. From 1900 he was (OberLt.) with the 8th Infantry Regiment. Sometime between 1906 and 1909 he transferred to 6th Infantry Regiment when a Hauptmann. In 1914 he was a Major with 1. Armee-Korps staff. If anyone has any regimental histories for these units and years and can find a picture (this is where the long shot comes in) I would greatly appreciate it if you would post the picture. In the 1914 Bayern Militar Handbuch listed with his awards is a J within a circle. I do not what what award this is for. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

J in a circle is the 1905 Luitpold Military Jubilee Medal. PL in a circle is the 1911 version of that. It looks like this familiar emblem, which in a Prussian or Navy List is the Prussian Lifesaving Medal-- ®
Each variety of Rank List has its own ... peculiarities. An A in a circle in a Prussian List is a General Decoration Medal in Silver, whereas in Bavaria a circled A is the 1904-06 Southwest Africa medal, accompanied by a 1 for bronze or a 2 for steel. (At least they SHOWED campaign and jubilee medals!!!!)
Interpretation of the various types of Rank List and Military Handbook requires certain...
"lateral thinking" skills.
Or proclivities toward madness.
