    Doug

There is of course no provenance offered, and if their was, I would expect that it would date back only as far as the recent SOS....

None-the-less...I personally think the piece offered by Weitze warrants far more discussion hours than the above 1813 'screw-back' - especially in light of Brians 'grinding' analysis...

It would be good to hear your comments.... particularly about the construction..

To the contrary Brian - I do!....

I agree with all the comments you've made re the screw-back, but I don't think they necessarily pertain to the Weitze piece...I have studied all the photo's Weite provides, and see no evidence of the core being ground..... and from what I've learned from the only sources we have left - books and discussion - this style of assembly and attatchment, and the overall 'look' of the piece make this - for me at least - one of the more interesting candidates for 'period' that I've seen come out of a dealers shop...

If this did crop up on Thies, with provenance, would we evaluate the item differently?

You've seen em come and go, I haven't, so fire away!

(Sorry to crash your thread Andy...)

Regarding the Weitze piece, and this has NOTHING to do with the dealer or even the piece itself.....

      1) I can't make a call from a photo. I see Elvis in this one, too.
      2) If it doesn't have documentation, I wouldn't buy it for serious $$. That's the way I see it these days---the crooks have ruined the rare EK market, at least for me. I don't have the money to throw around or the imagination to put a piece like that in my collection. I'd rather have a caseful of 1914's or a few 1870's than pay that kind of money for any non-documented 1813 EK1.

Right, absolutely right. I would have added SERIOUS documentation. If there's not a family connection, forget it... Dealers know how desperate collectors are to fill their frames and they make your dreams come true.

Sure - and 100% agreed - absolute caution needed with any '13 EK...but I (indeed we here) have as many problems with so called 'provenance' as we do with many of the items themselves....

This just didn't look at all like the painful modern reproductions we so often see here and elsewhere and with the little seen (documented as early) open back set-up with loops (albeit 8 not 4), I thought it might be worth a chat.

I guess 'nail on the head' is Brians comment re the family connection - but that aint gonna happen in this New Zealanders lifetime....

Thanks though - I appreciate the comments gents.

            Elvis? ........

              ELVIS is in the building:

Methinks we have a scam artist at work in "jolly old". Here's the exact same or very very similar, "1813", in "unmodified" condition.
