Hi. Picked this up at a local boot sale. Appears to be some sort of badge and I can make out 1917. Any ideas, all help appreciated.

Weihnachten im Felde 1917 or Christmas on the field 1917 - yes military either German or Austro-Hungarian. 4 maybe InfReg 4?

'Christmas in the field' (if my German's correct) seems a strange 'motto' for a military badge. Does anyone know the significance of this and what type of badge it is.

Nothing strange about that - period post cards commemorating Christmas away from home during wartime service are quite common. IMO on the field is a better translation as in on the field of battle. And of course you are welcome.

As above this is a badge for the Austro-Hungarian Fourth Army IIRC.

That's because it's essentially a tinnie.
