Is it possible to date this piece? In my light research, it appears cores of cast iron are the earliest. I can confirm this core is magnetic, but I'm sure this isn't the only piece of evidence needed to determine. What are your thoughts?

Good one. The core is not cast but stamped so probably a bit later in the war (not the first months).
