It's tin with a flip lid

Alexander Herld, Elsenborn, is a well known photographer who took a lot of photos with soldiers

from the Truppenübungsplatz Elsenborn. His atelier was in Bütgenbach.

I think it's just an advertising cigarette case. Maybe they were given away as a premium to customers. The two slots were for the elastic band for holding the cigarettes.

You could only fit maybe two negatives at most in such a case.

Glass negatives were usually stored vertically in slotted boxes.

I was also thinking that also but it is small and the holes are on top and bottom not across. I'll post two more pictures with measurements. If cigs holder...wow they would be small. But we're learning..
