    Imperial naval sword

    Hello,

Can I please have opinions on this naval sword, it looks nice, there are no maker mark at the blade, but the spine is marked 98. It seams nice to me but is it usual with this "screw" at the top of the lion head? Any guess at the maker, wkc, acs?

    Thank you

That's not a screw from what I can see. It is the end of the tang peened over during assembly. Not uncommon.

Looks good. The grip may have shrunk over time causing the tang to loosen up. Normally it should be flush with the lionhead.

While it's true that German Naval Officer's swords were copies of the British 1827 pattern swords, with (British) crowns that varied depending on the monarch/time frame, I'm in agreement that this one is German. And unless the lighting is playing tricks with the imaging, I wouldn't be surprised if the hilt was actually a later wartime iron/steel example underneath some plating. FP
