RED EAGLE ORDER 2nd Class for Review

I purchased this cross today.
it is with maker marked W on the lower arm.
my little question is, not all Red Eagle 2nd class made in gold?
this cross looks like silver base with gold finishing.

Nimmergut lists them as both Gold and Silber Vergoldet.

Oh yes, both material were find in Gold and Silver with gold finishing.

But, is there any chance to tell the manufacturing timing regarding to the material was used?
Gold material indicates earlier / pre-war production?

Gold would indicate pre-war produced awarded pieces. I think a wearers copy might be made from more economical materials as well.
