The Pass is Saxon and I don't believe it goes with the bar.

The bar is from the thirties from a Wuerttemberg WWI vetran. So a Saxon pass is a non-combination. The picture is just the one and easily added. So not much of a group. Items probably added together randomly.

Question: I have not seen a bar before with these kind of cut outs on the back - any theories as to the why of it?

Not cut outs. If you look again, you'll see that the ribbons have been folded up over the backing and sewn to it. I've seen this before.

Normally, the ribbon, sewn in a fan shape to create the "U" would be underneath the felt backing. I have no idea why it was done this way. It's rather sloppy and may be an old re-mounting.

I've seen this kind of stitching too, and it looks perfectly period or at least many decades old. See how EK ribbon's white parts are deteriorated (faded, blackened) on elevated folds. Although not as neatly made as some high-fashion bar makers, I like this bar. It has a spirit of old ages.

True, but i still think it's a period bar. Modern fakers stitch thing the other way, not this awkward rosette style. I think it was some non-educated taylor in small town.
