Zahringer Lion Sizes

Nice pieces. May I ask what class they are and by the looks of the Zahringer Lion painting the right one is older, say 1875. Please advise.

Thank you Bill. They are both 2nd classes. And you are correct, the one without swords is older, you can always tell from the painting. But It's very hard to come up with an exact year. All I know is that it was awarded after 1866 and before WW1. Your estimate is propably close as I have thought it could be from the turn of the century. But untill someone finds out when the painting style changed, your guess is as good as mine.

I would say the first is 1870's-1880's, from what I can see. Question, they both look like they are Silver Gilt (Gold Plated), if so that would make them First Class?

The Grand Cross is Silver Gilt (Gold Plated). The Commander is Gold (18 / 20 K). The Knight is Silver.

I wish they were, but my camera just has a powerfull flash and hence it appears to be silver gilt. As far as I know they are just regular silver 2nd classes. You would think that they'd design all classes to be different in size, so that we would'nt have any problems in identification. It's so irritating that the material is the only difference between a 1st and a 2nd cl. Both have golden swords, the center is the same both obverse and reverse.. You just have to see if it's silver, silver gilt or pure gold to determine the class.
