Help in identifying decoration in portrait

Apologies for double posting, but I wasn't sure which forum is best for my question.

I am hoping someone can help me identify one of the items in this painting. This is the portrait of an ancestor that recently came back into the family after a long period of being considered lost. As a hobby military historian I wanted to make sure of course that I could identify all the decorations in the painting (many family records, as well as most of the orders and medals themselves, were lost in the Second World War, so there is no comprehensive list). I have had no trouble identifying most of them, but the neck badge behind the Order of St John (Knight of Justice) is a complete mystery. It doesn't help that it is half covered and not that clearly painted. I assume it is German, though perhaps not Prussian.

    I would appreciate any ideas!

To aid in the identification, the person pictured is Alfred von dem Knesebeck-Milendonck (1816-1883), Major in the Garde du Corps and the Landwehr. He was later heavily involved in medical care for the wounded and sick during the German War and the Franco-Prussian War with the Order of St John (hence the Order of the Crown with an Order of St John device). At one point he was also a member of the Reichstag. Lastly, his father was the Field Marshal Karl Friedrich von dem Knesebeck.

    Very impressive painting.

The Crown Order 3rd Class with Johanniterkreuz is very rare, and of course the Red Eagle 3rd Class with bow is lovely also.

The order you asked about is the Bavarian Military Merit Order, in my opinion.

      I believe his bar shows:
      • 1870 EK2
      • RAO3 with bow
      • KO3 with Johanniterkreuz
      • 1870 KDM (not sure)
      • 1848 KDM

Looks like a good candidate! I'd been searching for something with dark red/bordeaux cross arms, but I think you might be right.

Agreed, we still have the EK2 and the KDMs, unfortunately the others only in miniature! The last one I think could be the Verdienstmedaille of Baden, although I'm only going by the ribbon colour there. Still have the Order of St John set too (although normally you have to give it back when the holder dies, not sure how that happened!), but that's always the easiest to identify anyway.

The last position is not to ID.

If he served in the Krankenpflege the IC on non combatant ribbon passt zur
                KDM 1870 NC.

Could the last one be life-saving medal, considering the yellowish-like ribbon?

The portrait is really amazing, this man eradiates proud and dignity of someone who honoralby served for many years.
