The ribbon is of a different era, the core was inserted at some time, who knows? The frame is an early frame. How early? Who can say for certain. It was obviously not made as a fake or copy. It is what it is and someone put a lot of care and craftsmanship in it.

The first class is shown, or one almost exactly like it is shown in Wernitz' book, in "The Prussian and German Iron Cross" by D.E. Bowen (an early and very rare book, 1987, 335 pages, one of the best researched and documented of it's time), in "Das Eiserne Kreuz von 1813 bis heute", by Harald Geisler, 1995 by Verlag Klaus D. Patzvall, and in Iron Time, Previtera. Of course no two early crosses are exactly alike, but you can tell by comparison that the workmanship and metal ageing are very, very similar.
Please post both crosses in threads of their own as this is not really a thread for discussions. Short remarks, EKI seems to have a frame from a 1914, pointy inner corners and overall shape suggests that so maybe better start comparing those.

EKII is as you say a Frankenstein, no idea of time period of front frame as better shots is needed. Core is wrong and don't believe any period jeweller would replace a broken core with that. Backplate like a EKI do not belong on a EKII.

I would say a more charitable description of the EK2 is that it could be a period patriotic piece. Actually it has been discussed in a thread of its own, somewhere.

There has been one authentic 1813 EK1 posted in a "Holy Grail" thread, many years ago... it can be found with a search.

Thanks for that info Miro, and you are probably right. However, it has been suggested that I move my crosses to a separate thread and that this thread was not meant for discussions. 'Nuff said.

Mine is almost a twin of yours - another 'bent stem' core.
                  Ignore the repro ribbon.

The most exclusive clubs are those with the fewest members.
