The early leather cases were made by a single Berlin manufacturer called H.F. Schwartz. I believe the leather-covered cases were made right up til the end of 1916. Around this same time (Nov. 1916), jewelers were instructed to make previously gold orders (PLM, Crown Orders, etc.) in gilt silver, and cases were no longer covered in leather. Obviously these were cost-saving decisions. Also, additional case makers were licensed to meet demand, which is why we see a larger variety of "award-type" cases from the second half of the war. But yours is still in the same style as the earliest cases, with the same interior components of wood, velvet and silk, just without a leather covering. So I would guess that your case was made by Schwartz after 1916.

I believe this may be an example of an early production leather-covered EK1 presentation case. What do you guys think?
