    Imperial U-Boat Badges

I would like to know if any of the Imperial U-Boat badges were manufactured in all brass or bronze? This is sometimes found in the descriptions provided by sellers. Being exposed to salt water it would make some sense, such as the Iron Cross awards having a brass core. I have also seen an Imperial U-Boat badge stamped on the back with "800" for silver content, and would wonder if these were some kind of private purchase that was also gilded in gold?

Any input would be greatly appreciated, and many thanks!

Solid brass badges make up the majority of Imperial Uboot badges. Hollow stamped are from a later date, i.e. between the wars until the end of 1945. I've never seen a solid silver one that I believed in though technically it is possible.

Thanks Don! I appreciate the information. In so many descriptions I see these badges described as "tombac" composition, or what some tell me is pot metal. I guess gilded bronze means gilding on top of the bronze metal.

        Chris,

As an FYI, the brass core Iron Crosses had nothing to do with the Kriegsmarine and preventing rust on EKs from salt water. That is a myth that has been discussed at various points on the forum and in several books.

Tombak and brass are fairly synonymous.

Gary, Thanks for the reminder. I believe I saw the IC brass core information in Steve Primavera's book.
