    Enameled cross with number 25

    HI Guys

I came across this enameled cross with a number 25 in its center. It caught my attention because the enameling reminded me of a WWII mothers cross.

I have no idea what it is (or even if this is the correct forum to be posting it on).

It is also maker marked on the back.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    best regards, Al R

IMHO it refers to a commemorative 25 year membership for a German Veteran-Organization possible for the German-French war 1870/71 veterans, produced at Cologne.
      Back reads Vaterländische Fahnenfabrik Köln.
      Hope this helps.

        Hi Velloncio

Thanks for looking and the very helpful information.

If from the 1870/1871 german-franco war and being that is is a 25 year commemorative award, would it have been issued in approximately 1895/1896?

        thanks, Al

          Hi Al,
would it have been issued in approximately 1895/1896?
No, later. This company exist since 1899. I don't think, that it has anything to do with the war 1870/71.

            Hi Uwe

thanks for looking and the additional information about the start of this company/badge maker.

I found it very interesting that the design and enameling resembled a WWII mothers cross so closely.

            thanks, Al

It's a common Teutonic cross Patee used in German iconography going back a thousand years. You often find this cross with blue and white enamel especially as part of Bavarian veteran association membership badges. You could find similarities in all kinds of military and hunting association crosses. The connection to the mother's cross is only by virtue of the commonality of this cross shape in German history, nothing more.

In addition to the informations already given I want to remark that I do not think this cross has a meaning regarding a fixed date (like: end of war, victory over... or thelike) because it probably would be mentioned explicidly on the cross, then.
More likely is a 25-year-membership reward for a club or association dealing with bowling, shooting, rabbitbreeding or some other spectacular activity
...because that - Vereinsbedarf - was the main topic of the production of the "Vaterländische Fahnenfabrik Cöln" (see enclosed picture of their 1929 catalogue...)

Hi guys thanks for looking and the additional comments.

The catalogue that Hagrid posted, and thank you for posting that, i.e. Vereinsbedarf, says it all "club equipment".

                  best regards, Al
