    Bavarian Medal Bar (Heiliger Michael)

    Hi all,

I would like to show you one of my Bavarian Medal Bar, this time a civil one.

    The medals are:

    - König-Ludwig-Kreuz 1916.
    - Silberne Medaille des Verdienstordens vom Heiligen Michael

This Bar was made by Gebruder Hemmerle, the stamp at the back matches with the one made by them.

    Best Regards

    Antonio

This medal was a civil one awarded (from 1837 on) to those who were devoted to the country, showing it appreciation and love to it and also providing an outstanding service to the land.

It was given to any person (Bavarian or not, German or not) with no regards of Religion or Condition.

It is a Civil award but also seen oft in Army members (also from other countries).

I hope this information could help you.

        Best Regards

              Hi Don,

I don't really know the criteria for this Medal to be awarded.

But if you have a look at the book: “Die Geschichte des St. Michaels-Ordens in Bayern und der St. Michaels-Bruderschaft seit dem Jahre 1693 bis auf die Gegenwart. ” del Dr. Ludwig Trost (1888), after the page 75, in 1887 the Bavarian wanted to change part of their civil Orden and Medals System to make it similar to the Prusian one with the Roter Adler Orden and the Kronenorden. So they changed the Verdienstorden der Bayerischen Krone and the Verdienstorden vom Heiligen Michael to be similar to hose Prusian ones.

But (again) if you see the "Statuten" of the "Kronenorden", you see that both Kronenorden and Roter Adler Orden are in the same level, the first to be received, the first to be put on the west part in a Medal Bar. But for the Bavarians, the Verdienstorden der Bayerischen Krone was superior to the Verdienstorden vom Heiligen Michael as you can see in the new "Statuten" from 1887, specially in the Article XIII from those new Statuten. By the way, the Silver Medal was then introduced and the bronze one came in 1894.

But at the end of the day, I cannot tell you 100% who decided and why a medal could be awarded. SORRY.

And now, my questions to you.

              a) The bar that you posted s just great... is that yours?

              b) ¿Do you think that there is one medal missing in that medalbar? He was in the army in 1905 and then again won the MVK (maybe Deschler one?). Shouldnt he have the Dienstauszeichnung III Klasse?

              Best Regards

              Antonio

A really nicelooking medal. Was it a common medal? I don't recall seeing it. Both very nice medal bars IMO, especially since one is civil, the other combatant.
