Enlisted Medal Reference?

Excuse my ignorance, but I was unaware of there being any reference with explanations of the winning of enlisted men's medals. Does this information come from a unit history and if so, was it mentioned due to the particular medal awarded?

It's from Die Bayern Golderner Ehrenbuch. It has all the citations for the Tapferkeit medals and the Max Joseph Order and the Sanitar Order. There is a similar tome for Wurtemburg I believe.
Many unit histories also have citations in the back for their top award winners.
