    Model 1889 sword Question

I believe this is a Model 1889 German sword. Marked ERFURT on one side and P.D. LUNESCHLOSS SOLINGEN on the other. Blade length is only 23.5 inches. I was hoping someone out there can tell me what branch this was for. Thanks

I think what you have as opposed to a sword is a Prussian sidearm for either Standard Bearers or Land-Gendararmerie. More like a bayonet. In my experience fairly rare. Condition is not great but still hard to find. Should have a leather scabbard. Hope this helps. Someone may have better info.

      Robert....
Are there any markings on the spine of the blade near the hilt?

There are markings by the spine but they are difficult to make out.

            Hello,

yes, it is either a standart-bearer or Gendarmerie sidearm.

It looks like the fittings are from steel and not brass ?
Than it is a pretty late version.

Are there any regimantal markings on the other side off the hilt ?

            Regards

The fittings are actually brass. Inspector marks on front of guard. Thanks to all for information.

I thought that I knew a bit about German edged weapons from this period, but I have never seen one of these before that at least I noticed. If I had walked by it in the sheath I may have just written it off as a child's sword without even looking.......lesson learned here!

Very nice post to get to see something so unusual. I love the quill back blade on the OD89 hilt.
