    Question for a champion..

    A question for a champion..........

Schütze as a rank on an EK doc...... Schütze Schmidt 3. Komp. 75 Infantry regiment (for example).

Why is he Schütze? We have Reservist Schmidt, Füsilier Schmidt, Infanterist Schmidt, Grenadier Schmidt, landwehrmann Schmidt etc etc. .... But why a SCHÜTZE Schmidt in a regular infantry Company?

A theory.... When the Infantry Companys started to get the MG 08/15 they were integrated directly into the INFANTRY battalions at COMPANY level, not in seperate M.G. Battalions.... can it be that a Machinegun private in an infantry Company was a Schütze on his EK doc??

Good question! I don't pretend to know, but the US Army 1917 Abbreviation manual pg 108 says: Schütze = rifleman, sniper, marksman, private (in all machine gun and "Schützen" battalions).

As punctuation seems to be key in this manual, it seems as though you need not be in a MGA to have this title.
