WWI GERMAN IRON CROSS 1st CLASS

    I need some help.

German WWI Iron cross first class , were some of them issued unmarked
during the period of 1914-1918? If so were they faulted or flat version or both?

    Thanks Joe Semen

Joe, I think there is a consensus in admiting only flat crosses were issued and vaulted ones were private purchase. But not necesarily all flat crosses were awarded pieces. I am sure Godet for example would have sold a flat private cross if the recepient wanted to. As for MM I have not read about any correlation between marked and issued pieces. Cheers, Alex

Hard to say for certain but being from old school I always thought flat were the issued and any vaulted were of the private purchase option. I also would say marked by like KO and KAG for some types of marks you will see. 800 marked for standard issue or not marked any silver and usually you will see higher grades of silver like 835 and 925 as such on vaulted private purchase types. But as we have learned over the last 40 years nothing is standard and there are always exceptions. Other here will probably give an opinion based on what they too have learned or even obtained through their years of experience. TPK
