Advice on dealing with the Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv

The following is a copy of a letter that I received from the Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv concerning a query that I made recently about a Bavarian aviator Friedrich Freiherr von Berchem (see this thread for the genesis of the whole thing).

Solche finden Sie z. B. unter www.overtheftont.com.

My German is admittedly just a hair above the "where is the bus stop" level of skill, but the gist of the letter comes across as a listing of all the interesting related material that they have, without the slightest indication that they have even the vaguest interest in allowing me access to anything. Perhaps I'm reading this wrong, or perhaps there are some bureaucratic hoops that the author is taking for granted that I'm aware of.

This might be a little more appropriate for the Order of Battle and Individual Research forum, but I thought that the collective wisdom of the Imperialoids here might bear more fruit.

...anybody have any thoughts of how I ought to proceed with this?

    Thanks,
    --Chris

    Hi Chris,

    roughly translated it says:

"We have countless Information about Friedrich Frhr. von Berchem...We have a file about v. Berchem, which ends after the first WW. Additionally we have the inheritance of v.Berchem, which contains several photo-albums which includes pictures of WW1, then a diary for August-October 1914 and his flightbook for his flights from May-September 1915. Because we don´t have the time for bigger researches, we can only give you few informations. But i recommend to you to contact some Flight-Historians. You can find some under www.overthefront.com (I think, there is a typo in the original)

Hope, this is of some help.

    best regards,

    Gerd

That's more or less what I had taken from the document as well, largely courtey of Babelfish. Do you know if there is a way that I can actually get a look / copy of any of that information short of travelling to Bavaria (rather tough to do on my lunch hour), and knocking on the archive's door?

      Thanks,
      Chris
