1914 2nd Class White ribbon

I just received this 2nd Class Non Combatant Iron cross marked SW.

I have one curiosity about the ribbon which is 22cm long and made in a loop, is it done this way for some purpose or it was the preferred method of the recipient ?

Ribbons are sewn this way to loop them through the buttonhole for wear.

Pass the sewn end of the ribbon through the buttonhole, loop it around to the front again and drop the cross through the loop. Pull it tight and you have this:
