Saxe-Weimar Medal for Arts and Sciences 3. Class

At a small and usually lame local show this past Saturday I came across this beautiful medal while looking at a Vietnam-era patch, just because I liked the design.

The size and quality stood out to me and thanks to the miracle of the iPhone, Don D. identified and valued it for me within a few minutes.

It seemed like a good risk as the price was good so I got it.

The medal is made in two separate pieces: the medal, and the wreath. When new, the medal was polished or frosted and the wreath was darkened.

The quality of this strike and the workmanship of the medal are quite incredible.

With only 26 awards, this is a rare medal, and was a lucky find at a local show.

Thanks for looking and thanks again to Don for his quick help.

I was wondering when you would get around to showing it. A very nice award with excellent craftsmanship.

Nice Catch gentleman. Beautiful and good quality.

Sometimes you get a few good surprises in the places you less expect them.

A very good find, congratulations. I have the Coburg Gotha version with Duke Alfred portrait but in cross form. Really hard to find as they were awarded in such low numbers.
                Yours is fantastic.

                    Hey Paul,

The number came from a discussion on a German forum. Not sure exactly where those guys got it.

Maybe Hessenthal & Schreiber or Ludvigsen?

                      H&S 1607

H&S doesn't have the number awarded.

As mentioned, this is the 3rd class. The 1st class was similar in design and inscription but not only was it in gold, the medal was oval!

A very nice strike and on correct ribbon as well. 100%!
