There's a pretty well known photograph of a mail cart in Germany stacked high with German Stahlhelm and Pickelhauben with mailing labels, ready to be sent home.

My friend had a steel helmet that had the address painted on the front and the stamps applied directly to the Helmet. It made it all the way from France to Chicago like that.
