AWS - 1870 2nd class

After an almost 2 weeks long striking from the Finnish mailservice,
I am really pleased the striking is over and what the mail it brought to me.
Now I have the yearmodels of Juncker/AWS in 2nd classes, but several variations missing from both 1st and 2nd class crosses so the hunt is not even close to over...
But for me, this is personally a small Milestone as I focis mainly on Juncker/AWS within Iron crosses!

Very fine alloy and steel AWS Dansson.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that AWS was the first company to use stamped steel for cores. They certainly were the only maker I know of to use stamped steel for their 1870 EKs before WWI. Everyone else used cast iron.

Stamped steel cores are just one of multiple AWS innovations that EK manufacturers in the Third Reich adopted. Others include the wider frame (44mm), silvered alloy construction, and frosted beading rim. It was AWS's early adoption of these features that made theses crosses so hard to identify for a long time. They seemed to everyone, including me, to be be Third Reich-era duplicates. But now we know that is not true; 19th C. AWS EKs simply prefigured TR-era EKs remarkably well.

not only,,,only 1 period veterans picture is known to exist to legitimize these AWS 1870 crosses

The AWS crosses are the most intriguing frames around ,,

AWS managed to produce those frames from 1900's to 1945 without the all so well known frame flaws in the beads .

so 55 years or more without signs of wear to the frame pressing tools .
identical frames on 1870 /1914 /1939 crosses and junker era types without wearing out the pressing tools is highly questionable .

sure there is a explanation and theory for it ,,,
but this forum is so far not aware of the techniques and producing conduct behind it ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,just yet .
and so far no discussions could developed around it .

so be careful to time frame any 1870 ek ,,,just yet

Thanks for the input!
I know that Juncker did use an AWS frame in the begining of the 2nd World War, I would guess that it was old stock from AWS, or then dumped because the quality was not high enough. But then they obviously made new frames which are found on 1939 Junckers with flaws and that kind of stuff, but not on 1914 or 1870 AWS crosses.
1939 collectors call the AWS frame which can be found in some Junckers the WFS frame (Wide frame Schinkel), and the later frame types 3 flaw frames, common LDO frames etc.

I personally belive that my 1870 AWS is made before 1914 because the really sharp details on the frame. My camera isn't exactly helping me with proving the sharpnes because if we have bad quality or bad sharpnes on something, it is in my camera

More period AWS 1870 pictures would be great to find, especially with some year written on it which would help to timeframe it!
Or maybe some AWS catalogues with pictures?


All this is work in progress and I hope we can all together solve the mysteries behind the AWS & Juncker and other manufacturers!

No,
the cross has an Alloy frame and the "markings" on the ring are just scratches. The Silver frames and marked 1870 AWS is my next main goal!

Trevor once posted his AWS collection here on WAF, it was a huge and great collection and I am aiming for at least the same or even more, it will be a really tough challenge undepending how what my end result will be
I have more AWS and Junckers variations natutally, but this is the 2nd class year model family I managed to complete, which I am happy off!
