    1870 EK I pics.....

    Hi guys,
A funny thing happened on the way to the forum. I got a bit sidetracked by a three day show in the Chicago area.
I found this beauty of an 1870 EK I. It's a Wagner & S.marked with the 14 Loth: silver proof.
I look forward to your thoughts on it.
    Enjoy the pics!
    Tony

This Wagner replaces this one that I sold a while back on a foolish venture.

                  Despite the repair... just perfect.
A nice replacement for the one you sold

This is why I like the early crosses. The core details are so sharp that
you could stub your toe on that "W".

Well done Tony. That is a real beauty.

Thanks guys. I couldn't let it pass. You just don't see these early award pieces very often. As for the replaced catch on the reverse it doesn't bother me. It was well done quite awhile ago. It's part of it's history and adds a bit of charactor to the piece. Not too bad for a 140 -145 year old EK. This is a historical piece that has been there done that. The replaced catch is a small testiment to that fact.

                        Just a point of interest.
Depending on whose figures you use for total '70 EK Is awarded they are about 5 times rarer than a TR era Knights Cross. The KC with Oakleaves is only about 1 1/2 times rarer than a period award 1870 EKI.
They are special. This one in particular is the best Wagner I have had the priveledge to own, and a beautifully trademarked one at that.
                        As I said before....."this one's a keeper."

                            Trevor.
Thanks again for your earlier counsel on this piece.
Just too good to pass up.

besides being a very nice cross I must note ..greg,,

I have my reservations about this cross being early ...
and reservations to the thought that sharp details have anything to do with early crosses ..

unfortunately the mater go's to deep in to period documentation ,,,to be of any use ....

just let it be a very nice cross Tony ,,I like it very much

                              and thanks for showing
